Listening to what your body has been holding

Somatic and experiential therapy helps you understand how emotions, stress, and past experiences live not only in the mind, but also in the body.

Many emotional experiences are not stored only as thoughts or memories. They are also carried in the body through tension, nervous system responses, and physical sensations that developed in response to stress or trauma. Somatic and experiential therapy recognizes that meaningful healing often involves listening to these bodily experiences rather than analyzing them alone.

In therapy, we gently begin to notice how your body responds to different emotions, memories, or relational dynamics. By bringing awareness to these physical experiences with curiosity and care, clients often begin to understand their inner world in a new way. This process supports the nervous system in moving from patterns of tension or protection toward greater regulation, safety, and ease.

Understanding Somatic Work in Practice

In my work, somatic and experiential therapy focuses on developing awareness of how your nervous system responds to stress, connection, and emotional experiences. Rather than staying entirely in conversation, we may also slow down and notice sensations, emotional shifts, or subtle changes in the body as they arise during our work together.

This approach allows insight to move beyond intellectual understanding and into lived experience. Over time, clients often begin to recognize patterns in their nervous system responses and develop greater capacity to stay present with emotions that previously felt overwhelming. The goal is not to force change, but to help your system learn that safety, flexibility, and regulation are possible.

Somatic and Experiential Work Can Be Especially Helpful If You Notice Experiences Like:

  • Feeling chronically tense, on edge, or unable to fully relax
  • Anxiety that shows up strongly in the body through racing thoughts, tightness, or restlessness
  • Difficulty identifying or accessing emotions
  • Feeling emotionally numb, shut down, or disconnected from yourself
  • Strong physical reactions to stress or relational conflict
  • Feeling overwhelmed by emotions that seem to arise suddenly
  • A sense that your body reacts before your mind understands why
  • Wanting to feel more grounded and regulated in your daily life
